The first step into (advanced) modding is to enable the "archive invalidation". With that your Fallout 4 can load so called "loose files", which many mods needs. This how-to will show you how to enable it.
Step 1: Find your Fallout4Custom.iniFor Mod Organizer 2: In MO2 open menu "Tools", go into "Tool Plugins" and click "INI Editor"
Click on the tab "fallout4custom.ini"
For Vortex or no/other mod manager:
Go into the folder "Documents\My Games\Fallout4\"
If there is no file "Fallout4Custom.ini" create it.

The item sorting and interface extension include many parts, so there are many parts that can make problems.
This troubleshooting document helps you to identify problems and whats necessary to fix them.
Notes
This guide uses the default settings. So be sure, that you use the default settings to make this guide accurate.
The checks are in logical order. So you should check them in that order. The problem solution only works if all previous checks are successfully.

The basics: Four main parts
The whole item sorting requires four parts, which combine each other to a working item sorting. These parts are:
User interface
Item Sorter Mod - ESP
Item Sorter Mod - Tag configuration
Icon Library Mod
See the corresponding section later in this article for details on each part.
Term "Item Sorter Mod"
The naming is not always clearly. But in most cases, an "Item Sorter Mod" means the parts 2 (esp) and 3 (tag configuration).
Common mod examples
