FIX FOR THE Checking 0 files for repacking Repacked 0 textures in 0 files! ERROR!
The author instructs to set Override Directory to the Texture Override folder so that the program can repack everything at once. This however is what's causing the error! All the files equal to almost 8GB total and for many users the DSR Texture Packer cannot handle such load. Instead what you need to do is to set Override Directory to 1 mod file and repack it. Then repeat this process for rest of the files. Each file alone is barely above 2GB and the DSR Texture Packer can handle that without any issues.
To make it absolutely clear to everyone, put all files in the Texture Override folder as you normally would. However only repack 1 file at a time, not all of them. For example we first set Override Directory to "\Texture Override\Maps Part 01-220-1-0-1587470011". We repack this file. Then we set it to "\Texture Override\Maps Part 02-220-1-0-1587471408". Repeat this process for "Objects NPCs and Enemies" and "Update File".
I'm about 99% sure I have this installed correctly but uh, I honestly haven't been able to tell if it is even working. I am usually pretty good at picking out minor differences in texture resolution, but in this case... I know DS1 had pretty good looking textures in some places already but I really haven't noticed any difference, anywhere, on anything.
I have an older screenshot of Quelaag's Sister that I have been using for comparison, and it's almost impossible to tell the difference between the two. I found one surface on one egg that, if I directly compare up-close across 'before' and 'after' I can JUST barely tell that, the new textures are somewhat more detailed.
While I appreciate the author's attempt to be as true to the original look of the game as possible I can't help but feel that at the same time, it feels sort of... superfluous to do so little, since many textures are still very low resolution.
I guess it's a balancing act. Anyway, I will probably still continue to use it since I don't want an overhaul, I just want the game to look a little bit nicer.
For anyone still thinking of trying this outdated mod in 2024, my advice is to abandon it. I have tried numerous times, there were no errors during installation, but once in the game, none of the textures change – everything remains vanilla. Moreover, I lost control over my Xbox controller, which neither Steam nor my computer could detect. Attempting this mod will not only consume a significant amount of your time, bandwidth, and memory, but even if it does work, you won't notice any changes. Now, it may also cause hardware failures.
Nah, it still works fine. That's your your computer being fucked. Whether to use this or Re-Remastered is simply a matter of preference. I've used this one for half my playthrough and only just discovered Re-Remastered exists (lol), so I'll be trying it out soon. This mod worked perfectly fine, though.
by any chance you know if this will work with Prepare to die again - Of Ash and Dust mod? i asked over on the Of Ash and Dust page but i did not get any response lol. thank you for the work that was spent on this mod it is appreciate.
This mod is quite outdated now, I recommend checking out DS1 Texture Overhaul by fromsoftserve instead which uses more updated AI upscaling. As a bonus, you don't even have to use the Texture Repacker anymore
If you just want better textures and don't mind or have any issues with using "DSR Texture Packer and Unpacker", then this is your mod.
If you just want the PTDE textures, scaled and improved, but with some bugs in some armors, NPCs and that have not received updates to correct them, then use "DS1 Texture Overhaul".
If you want the above, but with those and other texture bugs fixed (but there are still bugs), maps with better shading, better lighting and constant updates, but you don't mind downloading 10gb or more, using mod engine to make it work, another materials mod and a reshade preset, then use "Dark Souls Re-Remastered Mod".
i managed to load the map textures by taking whats inside of them and putting them inside one folder called "map" (only worked for me when i named it "map").

That's it, now you can enjoy the mod.

I've been using this mod for years now and never had any issues.
The pics look insane but s#*! happens.
